Wind Cave

Wind Cave or Cave of the Wind, is the largest volcanic tube in Europe and the sixth largest worldwide. It is an 18 km-long tunnel located in the northwestern part of Tenerife. The difficulty level for this hike is average and takes a maximum of three hours to complete. The Wind Cave is a maze-like underground passageway that was formed due to the volcanic eruptions of Pico Viejo nearly 27,000 years ago. This tunnel consists of lava cascades, lava stalactites, lateral terraces as well as lava lakes and is, therefore, truly a marvel of nature. Cueva del Viento is a volcanic cavity which was formed over 27000 years ago from the basaltic lavas released from the first eruptive phase of the Pico Viejo volcano, located next to Mount Tiede. It extends more than 17 kms and there are three different levels of passageways filled with lava pits and terraces. The caves are rich in fossils of Canarian mega fauna and the bones of Gallotia goliath and Canariomys bravoi have also been found here. Guimar Pyramids are a collection of six freestanding pyramids, outside the town of Guimar. They are in the centre of a large archaeological site that also includes a museum. There is also an auditorium and a souvenir shop. The pyramids of Guimar refer to the step pyramids in the island of Tenerife which look like agricultural stone terraces that were built in the 19th century from lava stone. These were said to be common throughout the Canary Islands. But Dr. Heyerdahl, a Norwegian ethnographer, said that these were neither terraces nor a pile of stoners. These are pyramids that have been built pain stakingly and are constructed according to some principles common in Peru, Mexico and Mesopotamia. The Ethnographic Park at Guimar Pyramids gives you the possibility to visit these interesting and rare structures and it also gives a dimension to those theories relating to the possible diffusion of ancient civilisations. La Laguna was once the capital of the island. The Masca Gorge Trail connects the tiny hamlet of Masca to a black volcanic sand beach, popularly known as Masca Beach. This is a steep hike as the trail is filled with uneven volcanic rocks. The course is average to follow and it takes about 3-4 hours to get to the beach. It is mandatory to be physically fit to go on this hike as returning to the village through the ravine takes much longer. The number of visitors allowed to this hike is limited.
