This tabernacle is also known for its gorgeous architectural style, as it was erected during the rule of the Vijayanagar conglomerateOther temples, like Tirumalai and Arunachaleshwara Temple, are also among the notorious tabernacles of Thiruvannamalai. There are some ancient grottoes in Thiruvannamalai that are devoted to great saints, and some Lamaseries for a spiritual retreat.

Culture of Thiruvannamalai

Tiruvannamalai has a rich culture centred around the popular Annamalaiyar temple. This temple is considered to be one of Shiva's five temples, or Panchabhutasthala, where the Lord appears in the form of one of his five natural elements. Here, he is said to have appeared as a flame or fire. He is one of the tallest temple towers in India and is famous for his 1000-column hall from the Vijayanagara period. This temple attracts a large number of people during the Karthikadeepam festival, which is held from November to December. A huge deepam containing almost three tonnes worth of ghee is lit at the temple, and pilgrims walk barefoot for miles around the hills. This is an act considered penance to get rid of sins. Ramana Ashram, located near the hill, is also his other cultural attraction in the city, along with other temples in the city that worship Lord Vishnu.

Legend of Thiruvannamalai

The legend of this city is closely related to that of the famous Annamalaiyar Temple. This temple is located near the sacred Annamalai hill, which is considered to be the lingam of Lord Shiva. This temple has many interesting legends. The story tells of a time when Goddess Parvati playfully closed the eyes of her husband, Lord Shiva, and the world fell into darkness. Thereafter, the goddess performed penance, and the Lord appeared as a flame on Annamalai Hill and restored light to the world. The second legend tells how Lord Shiva challenged Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to find their source when he appeared before them like a flame.
