History
The history of Tiruchirappalli is believed to date back to the Stone Age. It is said that the Naga people lived in this area even before the Chola people. During the Chola period, Tiruchirappalli became widely known as a cultural and administrative centre. Urayur, the present-day suburb of Trichy, was once the capital of the Chola state. Kalanai Dam in Trichy is believed to be the oldest dam built by humans. After the reign of the Chola dynasty, the Pallava empire emerged. During the reign of Pallava King Mahendravarman I, the foundation stone of the famous rock fort was laid. In 1327, the kingdom was completely absorbed into the Delhi Sultanate. However, this rule did not last long. In the mid-14th century, his Sultanate of Delhi in the Kingdom of Madurai was replaced by the Vijayanagar Empire. The reign of the Vijayanagar Empire is considered to be the most important period in the history of Trichy. The empire's deep influence is evident in the elaborately constructed Hindu temples. Trichy witnessed her two Carnatic wars. The second war occurred in 1749 and ended with the accession of Muhammad Ali Khan Walaja to the throne. During the British Raj, Trichy was famous as the birthplace of 'Cherkut', also known as the Trikinopoli cigar. In 1866, Trichy was given the status of a municipality. The city played an important role in the Indian independence movement.
