Balpakram National Park

Located in the southern Garo Hills in Meghalaya, about 167 Kms from Tura, Balpakram National Park lies at an elevation of about 3,000 feet above the sea level. The Park is a famous national park which is well known for its pristine beauty. The word Balpakram means the 'land of perpetual winds', and the national park is blessed with charming grace and breathtaking scenes. The government of Meghalaya finally realised the significance of the region in the conservation of important species and its mythological associations; and created the Balpakram National Park on 15 February in 1986. Today, the area boasts of a myriad of species of fauna and flora. These species include the rare Lesser Panda, the Indian Bison and the Stag like Serow. A variety of very rare medicinal herbs, which are locally known as 'dikges', also grow abundantly in Balpakram. One can find a deep gorge in Balpakram, which is popularly compared to the Grand Canyon of the United States of America. The gorge is referred to as the 'land of the spirits' since it is believed that the spirits of the dead live here temporarily before finally embarking on the journey towards their final abode. Located close to Siju Wildlife Sanctuary, Naphak Lake is a pristine location, excellent for bird watching and fishing. Many of the birds who reside or migrate to Siju Wildlife Sanctuary can also be spotted here. It is located around 112 Kms from Tura and can easily be driven to.

The main attraction of the town of Tura, the Nokrek National Park is just 2km from the town. The Nokrek National Park is located close to the National Citrus Gene Sanctuary-cum-Biosphere which has some of the rarest animals and trees species. In May 2009, Nokrek National Park was added by UNESCO to its list of Biosphere Reserves. About 7 km away from the Tura, Pelga Falls is famous for angling and is also an excellent picnic spot. It is relatively free from crowds most of the time, making it ideal for those who shy away from buzzing tourist hotspots. The best time to visit the falls is during the monsoon season when the flow is at its peak. The local people can be seen fishing at the foot of the falls and nearby. Rongbang Dar Waterfall, also known as the Rongbang Dare, is located close to Chinabat Village, west of Tura. It is located around 39 Kms from Tura, which is about an hour and a half's worth of drive. At a height of over 120 ft, this waterfall has fantastic visual appeal, especially during the Monsoon season when the flow is large and speedy. The surrounding region of the waterfall is adorned by evergreen bamboo trees.

These are the 3rd largest caves in the Indian Subcontinent. Also known as 'the cave of bats', these caves have several chambers forming unexplored mazes.

Siju Wildlife Sanctuary is located near the Siju caves and River Simsang. It lies at a distance of approximately 120 Kms south of Tura, in the south Garo Hills district. Home to many rare and protected birds along with other animals, this sanctuary is also known as Siju Bird Sanctuary.

The Tura Peak is 872m above sea level. There is a reserve forest at this mountain peak along with a tourist bungalow, a cinchona plantation and an observatory. The massive yellow plains of Bangladesh welcome your eyes at the peak - an unforgettable sight. Trekking to the top of the Tura Peak is possible too.
