Barren Hills

Barren Hills is a famous attraction with vast stretches of lush green meadows and is a treat to the eyes. The sunset view that it offers draws people in large numbers. Because of its terrain, the hills are famous for trekking, paragliding and rock climbing, making it a perfect attraction for adventure seekers.

Situated in Vagamon in Kottayam-Idukki district border, the Kurisumala Ashram is a monastery in Syro-Malankara Catholic church that was set up in 1958. The name Kurisumala is composed of two words namely 'Kurisu' which means cross and 'Mala' which means mountain which is symbolic of the monks who spend a monastic life on the mount of the cross in the hill ranges. The monastery is situated at an elevation of 4000 feet above sea level. This place houses a community of spiritual seekers who leave their home and are not allowed to go back. The most attractive feature of the place that makes it worth visiting is that it is serene and silent here most of the times which is needed most to relax and introspect. Monks who stay here spend their time working, studying, and praying. A holy mass takes place here the chants for which have been adopted from the Hindu form of worship. The monks at Kurusimala wear Khavi dress, walk barefoot and sit on the floor while having food. A popular Christian pilgrimage, it is flocked by followers specially during the Good Friday week. Its followers come from various part of the country to climb up the hills with wooden crosses. Kurisumala is one of the most popular tourist spots in Vagamon.

Situated amidst dense vegetation, Maramala Waterfalls is a breathtaking natural water body that cascades from a height of 60 metres. It is situated in the Teekoy Rubber Estate amidst dense rubber plantations that make the attraction a suitable escape for nature lovers.

In fact, the name ÐPattumalaiÓ, meaning a hill covered with silk, is an apt description of the attraction which is situated on an elevation and offers a splendid view of the plantations down the slope.

This place has nothing for you to see but a lot to feel. 'Walking into the woods' is a popular English phrase and going to the Pine Hills, you will actually walk into the woods. The huge forest cover of Pine trees make up for a lovely sight. You can spend as much time here. Most tourists find this place relaxing and use their time here to relax in the lap of nature or stroll down the hill, it's a beautiful experience being so close to nature.

Situated 2500 metres above sea level, Thangalpara is a scenic attraction. It has a spherical rock formation which is quite unique and has some spiritual significance in the region. A Sufi Saint, Sheikh Fariduddin, is also believed to have lived on the hill till he died about 8 centuries ago. The stone is believed to be used by the saint. After his death, the stone grew in size. The tomb of the saint is located just next to this unique stone.

Located 10km away from Vagamon, Ulipooni makes up for a perfect picnic spot. It is away from the noisy crowd of the city, you might spot couples boating here. It is a peaceful romantic destination, a good place to spend a day with your family or spouse.
