Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Perched at an altitude of 10,000 ft, Barsey is best known for the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, a paradise for nature lovers. The sanctuary itself is a part of the West Sikkim and quite easy to access through road via Hilley, Dentam/Soreng from Geyzing. Also called the Yuksom Monastery, the Dubdi Monastery is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Located in the Yuksom Valley, in the Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim, it was established in the year 1701 and hence is one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim. Sitting quaintly on a hilltop, around 1-hour walk from Yuksom, the Dubdi Monastery is also sometimes called as "Hermit's Cell".

The capital city of the West Sikkim District, Geyzing, also known as Gyalshing is located at an altitude of 6,500 feet above the sea level with lofty and majestic mountains of the Himalayan range surrounding the city. The river Rangeet surges in the western part of the city. Keeping aside the scenic beauty of the nature that can be seen in Geyzing; the many monasteries situated here make it a major tourist attraction. Geyzing is one of the major towns in West District of Sikkim as well as the district headquarter. The town is also famous as Gyalshing among the local people and is located at a distance of 10km from Pelling. With the increase in the number of tourists travelling here every year, Geyzing has become a tourist hotspot and it is the main trading and commercial town of this region too. Yangtey, a hilltop which is a few kms away from here, is sited on top of a cliff and offers a beautiful scenic view. Glass Skywalk, Pelling

The Glass Skywalk is India’s first ever skywalk, set in the picturesque town of Pelling in Northeast Sikkim. Built at an astounding height of 7200 feet, this colossal structure allows tourists to look down several thousand feet in the air, from the peak to the very bottom of mountains. The Glass Skywalk is not for the fainthearted, or for people with vertigo as walking on transparent glass at such heights can be spine-chilling!. The Pelling skywalk is a transparent foot-over bridge made out of glass that is suspended hundreds of feet in the air. Since its inauguration in November 2018, the skywalk has become a major hub of tourists owing to the odd concoction of thrill and peace that it has to offer. There are several attractions that can be viewed from over the bridge including waterfalls, lush forests and monasteries. Goecha La is a high mountain pass located at a height of 4,940 m and acts as the base camp for the southeast face of Kanchenjunga. This place can only be accessed by trekking from Yuksom and it roughly takes 7-8 days for a person to reach Goecha La and come back to Yuksom. The area is accessible only after proper permits are granted.
