Places To Visit In York
Tenement Museum
Better known as the immigration museum, the Tenement Museum in New York City aims to spread awareness about the experience of immigrants and their importance in the formation and success of modern day America.
One of the most inspiring aspects of this museum is that it is actually located within the apartment building that housed more than 15000 immigrants from over 20 countries over the years, before it was converted into a museum. The museum is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, a prominent immigrant area of New York City in the past, and organises immersive experiences that give visitors a glimpse of what immigrant life was like in the 1800s and 1900s. There are apartments and shops which have been restored to look and feel like they did when they housed immigrants, costumed tour guides that portray the building’s former residents and even food tastings so people can try the typical foods of the immigrant communities of the time. There are also walking tours organised on weekends for visitors around the area.
