The Noguchi Museum

The Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York, is one of the few museums that has been established and self curated by the very artist whose works are on display in it. Built to showcase the sculptures, architectural models, designs, drawings and life of Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi, this museum property was first bought over by him in the 1970s when it was still an old gas station. It was subsequently converted into a museum and sculpture garden, undergoing major renovations in the 2000s again. The museum now holds multiple viewing galleries, a gift shop and the sculpture garden which is accessible all throughout the year. Visitors should also look out for the furniture and art pieces dotted around the museum which were constructed to commemorate the 75 year old tree in the garden which was chopped down due to the danger it posed to the museum building. An artist collective from Detroit used the wood from the tree to make sculptures, furniture and amenities for the museum, and further add to the eclectic experience that is the Noguchi Museum.
